Helium-3 Helium-4 separation technology

 

 

    The helium-3 isotope is a rare isotope of helium that is found in very small amounts in the atmosphere, typically only 0.000137 per cent of helium. However, the helium-3 isotope has a wide range of applications, including magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance and superconductivity. Two isotopes of helium exist in nature, 3He and 4He. 4He has a nucleus with two protons and two neutrons; 3He has only one neutron.

 

 

    Due to the rarity and application value of helium-3 isotopes, their separation techniques are of particular importance. At present, the main techniques used to separate the helium-3 isotopes are as follows

 

1. Cooling method: The helium-3 isotope is separated from the helium-4 isotope by cooling the helium gas to a very low temperature. This method has the advantage of high separation efficiency, but requires large quantities of liquid helium and complex equipment.

 

2. gas diffusion method: using the different rates of gas diffusion to separate helium 3 and helium 4. this method is suitable for separating small amounts of helium 3 isotopes, but the separation efficiency is low.

 

3. Ambient gas separation: Separates helium-3 isotopes from helium-4 isotopes by passing helium through a series of separation columns. This method is relatively simple, but requires complex columns and operating procedures.

 

 

    At present, separation techniques for helium-3 isotopes are constantly being developed and improved, allowing a wider range of applications for helium-3 isotopes.
