Improving the degradation efficiency of SF6 gas and contributing to the “dual carbon” goal

 

    Recently, the “Research and Application of SF6 Waste Gas Atmospheric Pressure Microwave Plasma Degradation Treatment Technology” led by the State Grid Hubei Ultra-High Voltage Company successfully passed the defense of the 2025 Headquarters Science and Technology Project Guide of the State Grid Corporation of China and was approved for project establishment.

 

    The project aims to develop a highly reliable and low-cost complete set of degradation devices through the research and development of SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) waste gas atmospheric pressure microwave plasma degradation treatment technology, equipment upgrades and application of results, and realize the full-scene demonstration application in substations and treatment centers of different voltage levels, and achieve 100% high-efficiency degradation treatment of SF6 waste gas, and actively help achieve the national “dual carbon” goals.

    The SF6 gas recovery and treatment center maintained by the State Grid Hubei Ultra-High Voltage Company is the company’s first batch of provincial treatment center pilot units, with rich experience in SF6 gas purification and degradation treatment. Ultra-High Voltage Company closely follows the requirements of the State Grid’s low-carbon and environmental protection business transformation work, improves the equipment upgrade and transformation effect of the SF6 gas recovery and treatment center, and takes the lead in proposing the “Research and Application of SF6 Waste Gas Atmospheric Pressure Microwave Plasma Degradation Treatment Technology” guideline requirements, and stands out from many competitors and successfully establishes the project.

 

    During the project application process, the team members faced strong competitors, conducted in-depth research on the current status and trends of domestic and foreign technologies, analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of competitors, and clarified differentiated competitive strategies. At the same time, they actively communicated with experts in related fields, invited experts to review and guide the application materials, and continuously improved the quality and competitiveness of the application materials. In the preparation stage for the defense, the team members carefully prepared the defense PPT, and conducted a comprehensive preview and answer to the questions that might be asked during the defense to ensure the smooth progress of the defense.

 

    It is understood that SF6 gas has been widely used in high-voltage electrical equipment due to its excellent insulation and arc extinguishing performance. However, the strong greenhouse effect of SF6 has caused great pressure on the environment. The State Grid Corporation of China vigorously advocates the recycling and reuse of SF6 waste gas, which significantly reduces the emission of SF6. However, during equipment maintenance or centralized treatment, about 2% of the waste gas still needs to be degraded because it cannot be recycled and purified. The existing degradation technology has high energy consumption, high cost, and low degradation efficiency. There is an urgent need for a portable, efficient, and low-cost SF6 waste gas degradation treatment technology.
